Most gardeners landscapers agree that the best place to use a weed mat is around the shrubs and trees where it can be installed and topped with quality mulch to hopefully last for years. For weeds with longer roots use a garden knife dandelion digger or hand weeder a long slender tool that looks like a screwdriver with a forked tip. Because its intended to be left in place its not recommended for vegetable gardens or annual flower beds. However it will also not allow vegetables to grow if you don t install it correctly.

Spot killers if you have a few weeds popping up through cracks in your patio or walkway pour a little bleach on them and wait a couple of days to pull them up. First remove all the weeds from the area you want to cover. This weed fabric provides a natural weed control. Now peg it in place using either metal or plastic pegs.

On the subject of my veg garden i never till in the straw mulch as there is no need to. Then cover with a thick layer of straw mulch for veggies wood mulch for flowers shrubs and the like. Lay it right over top of your plants. If your ground is a bit hard you might need to use a hammer.
